USC Climate Strike
On the day of President Folt’s Inauguration, student leaders held a Climate Strike in line with global September 2019 strikes. President Folt attended the strike and voiced her support for sustainable activism at USC.
An alliance of ECore, ESA, USG, and GSG members delivered a letter to President Folt's office requesting disclosure of fossil fuel assets. The letter received support from the presidents of USG, GSG, and faculty and staff on the Presidential Working Group on Sustainability, Education, and Operations.
Over 150 students held a rally in support of USC divesting its assets in fossil fuels and reinvesting those assets into clean energy. Many called the University Investment Office, requesting they disclose USC’s fossil fuel investments.
The Investment Office confirmed to the Daily Trojan that 5% of USC’s endowment, over $277 million, is invested in the fossil fuel industry, significantly more than expected.
Meeting with President Folt
Tianna Shaw-Wakeman, Nathaniel Hyman, Isabella Caltabiano, and Brooke Bell attend a meeting with President Carol Folt to explain why divestment and reinvestment are imperative for USC’s future. See the presentation here.
Meeting with Investment Committee
DivestSC Representatives attend a meeting with President Carol Folt, Former Chief Investment Officer Lisa Mazzocco, Chief Financial Officer Jim Staten, and two members of the Board of Trustees Investment Committee Mark Stevens and Suzanne Nora Johnson. See the presentation given here and the press release after the meeting here. These were the first students to ever meet with such key stakeholders regarding the USC endowment.
Due to Covid-19 and related economic fallout, the campaign decided to pause the activities until Fall 2020.
The campaign formally relaunched as DivestSC with a letter to the Board of Trustees' Investment Committee requesting full divestment from fossil fuel assets. Read the letter here.
Faculty Senate Resolution
The USC Faculty Academic Senate overwhelmingly passes a resolution supporting divestment from fossil fuels and reinvestment in clean technologies.
USC Announces Plan for Divestment
USC announces that it will freeze new investments in fossil fuels, divest from existing fossil fuel holdings, and create an Advisory Committee on Investment Responsibility with members of the Trojan community.
