USC Climate Strike

On the day of President Folt’s Inauguration, student leaders held a Climate Strike in line with global September 2019 strikes. President Folt attended the strike and voiced her support for sustainable activism at USC.

December 9th, 2019

Initial Letter

An alliance of ECore, ESA, USG, and GSG members delivered a letter to President Folt's office requesting disclosure of fossil fuel assets. The letter received support from the presidents of USG, GSG, and faculty and staff on the Presidential Working Group on Sustainability, Education, and Operations.

January 27th, 2020

Divestment Rally

Over 150 students held a rally in support of USC divesting its assets in fossil fuels and reinvesting those assets into clean energy. Many called the University Investment Office, requesting they disclose USC’s fossil fuel investments.

January 30th, 2020


The Investment Office confirmed to the Daily Trojan that 5% of USC’s endowment, over $277 million, is invested in the fossil fuel industry, significantly more than expected.

Meeting with President Folt

February 10th, 2020

Meeting with Investment Committee

DivestSC Representatives attend a meeting with President Carol Folt, Former Chief Investment Officer Lisa Mazzocco, Chief Financial Officer Jim Staten, and two members of the Board of Trustees Investment Committee Mark Stevens and Suzanne Nora Johnson. See the presentation given here and the press release after the meeting here. These were the first students to ever meet with such key stakeholders regarding the USC endowment.

Campaign Pause

Due to Covid-19 and related economic fallout, the campaign decided to pause the activities until Fall 2020.

October 12th, 2020

DivestSC Launch

The campaign formally relaunched as DivestSC with a letter to the Board of Trustees' Investment Committee requesting full divestment from fossil fuel assets. Read the letter here.

November 5th, 2020

USG & GSG Resolutions

Both the USC Undergraduate Student Government and Graduate Student Government pass resolutions supporting fossil fuel divestment and reinvestment.

December 16th, 2020

Faculty Senate Resolution

The USC Faculty Academic Senate overwhelmingly passes a resolution supporting divestment from fossil fuels and reinvestment in clean technologies.

February 17th, 2021

USC Announces Plan for Divestment

USC announces that it will freeze new investments in fossil fuels, divest from existing fossil fuel holdings, and create an Advisory Committee on Investment Responsibility with members of the Trojan community.
